The theme of escalating acrimony and mistrust between the U.S. and China, at least as recently reported by the mainstream media, may give the impression that the U.S. and China face seemingly irreconcilable differences. But this portrayal is extremely one-sided for it obscures the fact that the U.S. and Chinese economies are increasingly interdependent. The U.S. remains China’s leading trading partner, and China is the second most important trading partner for the U.S.

Highlights of the UN Association Town Meeting _ "Fukushima/Diablo Canyon—Now What?"  (October 24, 2013)  A Report by Julian Gresser

1. Reason Not the Numbers—The Town Meeting began with an admonition from Nobel Laureate Walter Kohn not to attempt to compare or compute the horrors of Fukushima versus Chernobyl by a calculus of human lives endangered or lost. Dr. Kohn cited the Talmudic maxim: "to save one life is tantamount to saving the whole world" (Sanhedrin 37a). The value of human life is infinite: a fraction of infinity is still infinity. 

The situation at the six nuclear power plants at Fukushima is dire and worsening by the day. Many people in Japan and other countries are ill from radiation poisoning. Fukushima is already many times graver than Chernobyl. Japanese engineers on the front lines are desperately calling for our help. 

An Explorer’s Wheel helps you frame the central scientific and technical challenges in pictures, images, metaphors, and stories. By “democratizing” the challenges in this way, every curious person can now make an imaginative contribution that will save lives. 

In the Chinese and Japanese languages the word for crisis (C. weiji, J. kiki 危機) is written with the combined characters for danger and opportunity. The unfolding tragedy of Fukushima presents not only Japan but also the rest of the world with a unique historical chance to embark on a bold new approach to innovation. Its driving force must be a spirit of free, fearless, and compassionate inquiry and exploration.

I write as an attorney and alliance mediator. My client is the volatile situation at Fukushima. The following is a Blueprint for Collective Action.
