Regarding Fukushima, the situation illustrates a profound loss of consciousness in Japan, the U.S. and around the world. Professor Ernst Frankel, Jerome A. Cohen and I proposed a potentially viable solution in April that, it seems, is being ignored by the Abe government:

 

 

The greatest present risk is the spent fuel pools (SFP) in Reactors # 1-4, especially if there is another large earthquake. A team of seismologists and geologists with which I am collaborating in Orlando Florida is picking up signals based on an analysis of multiple precursors that suggest good reason for "heightened awareness" of this possibility within the next 6-12 months. The critical question thus is how secure are the SFP and has the Abe government done anything to secure the SFP from the last M9.0 (2011) quake and the subsequent M7.1 quake (2013)? If the SFP are not secure, the potential consequences of a next large quake for Tokyo, Sendai, other Japanese cities and then by the Jet Stream for the rest of the world are potentially grave.

 

 

Regarding China and its role in Asia, I think the Obama Administration's present policy of demonizing China and encouraging a re-militarization of Japan is a profound error in judgment and attests to some very poor advice President Obama is receiving. One of the great success stories of American foreign policy has been American support for a democratic Japan. We should not be encouraging a potentially nuclear armed Japan and entangling the U.S. in its historic quarrels with its neighbors—for example, we are playing a very dangerous game siding with Japan againstChina in the Senkaku island dispute. 

 

In my professional work with China I am doing whatever I can to support creative collaboration and innovation between the two countries. Two examples are: a California-China Solar Partnership that will empower and engage 1 million solar innovators and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and China, supported by an online Smart Collaborative Innovation Network (S-COIN). The second is a project aimed at breaking the language barrier between Chinese and English.

Here the issue is not technology. Our technical team has a technical strategy for a long tail mash-up that can integrate all the existing pieces. The key is a new business model that is “co-opetitve”, networked and regenerative; IP will be critical. We have a framework and process that can permit good work to be accomplished in a way that will expand the pie for everyone.

 

 

Piloting Through Chaos--The Explorer's Mind (PTC/EM)  offers a blueprint for this fresh way of thinking about innovation-I call it "innovation integration" because it recognizes that the true "gold" in business and global affairs can be discovered by looking for the "inter-tidal" connections among fields, disciplines, and vertically siloed ways of thinking.

I see a way for China, Japan, the U.S. and other countries in East Asia to come together in a fresh and imaginative path where Heart and Mind work in harmony. But that is a story for another day…………….
